AUSTRALIA'S MILITARY HISTORY in the 20th CENTURY.

ARE YOU SEEKING AUSTRALIAN WARTIME SERVICE RECORDS and WORLD WAR 2 PAY RECORDS?

There are many places in Australia where you can obtain Defence Service Records and information on Australian Serviceman.

The information is available to all members of the public who wish to access the said records.

Firstly - There is a link on my links page to obtain Australian Service Dossiers for any World War 2 Serviceman from the National Archives of Australia (NAA). These World War 1 dossiers have now been digitized and are available free of charge by logging into the NAA site and downloading them. You CAN also obtain World War 2 Dossiers; Korean War Dossiers; Malaya/Borneo Dossiers; Vietnam Dossiers and any Serviceman who served in the Defence Forces with no Overseas Service - as long as the information you seek is at least 30 years old from the time you request the information. Also available in the National Archives site are - RAAF Casualty Files which contain information on all RAAF personnel who Died or were Prisoner's of War in the Second World War and Korean War. You can also obtain the Pay Records and Pay Allotment Cards for ALL Australian Servicemen who served in World War 2. (AIF and Militia). The Pay Files are held in the State of Enlistment. They contain the Serviceman's Name, Regimental Numbers (some had more than one number) Charge Reports and Fines; Date of Embarkation to Middle East and/or Papua and New Guinea, and the name of the person (allottee) they were sending money too back home. (in some cases it was not their Next of Kin), the allottees Name and addresses of residence which can be of help if you are doing your Family History and want to locate them. Also there are separate Folders for those who were Prisoner's of War and in these Files are the Serviceman's Paybooks with a photo of the Serviceman in the Paybook. They also contain Letters written by the Next of kin to the Army enquiring about Pay etc. There is also Pay Records for RAAF World War 2 Personnel. These Pay Records are held in the National Archives of Australia in the State of Enlistment for the Serviceman.

Also in the Victorian Office of the National Archives are held Files on the Prisoner of War Trust Fund. These Files contain information on money that was available to Prisoner's of War who were a little flat-cashed at the time and couldn't obtain money from elsewhere. They contain information such as Name; Regt No; the POW Camps they served in and any medical conditions that were suffered as a result of their imprisonment.
