TO A SOLDIER, KILLED IN MALAYA.

No happier child than he
Played 'neath fond parent eyes,
No sweeter voice lisped free
In that fair paradise:
And from that brow they saw those charms unfold,
That keep the fire of love from growing cold.

He grew to youth's estate,
And gave no cause for tears;
He, with young blood elate,
Grew stalwart with the years.
When foes sprang forth and set the world aflame,
He to his threatened country's rescue came.

The sea with heavy breast
Intoned a sad refrain,
As he among the best
Went blithely o'er the main;
Australia sent these sons from sunny shores,
To stave a fierce foe's purpose from her doors.

The enemy struck fast,
And ruthless still swept on;
And midst a world aghast,
Ephemeral glory won;
A gallant few could not such legions hold -
Legions that onward like the oceans rolled.

He fell as fall the brave,
Who know not craven fear;
We, whom he went to save
Shall offer up a tear,
And hope his noble epitaph shall be -
"He gave his life that others might be free."
