BULOLO - 1200 hours 21 Jan 1942. Air raid alarm sounded as a result of advice from LAE that approx 60 enemy planes had passed over FINSCHHAFEN in the direction of LAE and SALAMAUA. At 1225 hours - 5 Enemy fighter planes (believed to be Mitsubishi Type O) machine-gunned the 3 Junkers G31 aircraft on the BULOLO airodrome, totally destroying same. LMG Anti-aircraft gun mounted in pit on side of airstrip engaged enemy aircraft. No bombs dropped. Aerodrome only attacked. Attack ended 1240 hours. Damage - 3 triple-engined Junkers G31 freight planes destroyed on strip. No other damage. Casualties - Nil.
Reports by Lt Phillips and Lt Board - SALAMAUA - 1155 hours 21 Jan 1942. SALAMAUA attacked by 24 Japanese fighters and bombers. No warning of attack was given. Township area on isthmus first raked by machine gun and cannon fire; after which LOGUI aerodrome and vicinity bombed and machine gunned. Stores and buildings at KILA also subjected to machine gun and cannon fire. No action by NGVR during attack. At 1235 hours attack ended.
DAMAGE - LOGUI Aerodrome area - Buildings Guinea Airways Hangar and small hanger of Mandated Airlines completely destroyed. Stephens Aviation Hangar and Mandated Airlines large Hanger damaged. Freezer Plant and Buildings of Greenwood and Laws destroyed. House nearby damaged.
Township Area (Isthmus) - Damage to sundry buildings by machine gun and cannon fire.
Casualties - 1 Killed at Drome - Kevin Parer and 2 slightly injured. Drome undamaged and closed. Pilot L ROSS flying Junkers G31 freight plane about to land SALAMAUA when noticed bombs dropping, one hitting Carpenter's hangar. Pilot did not land but escaped under cover of cloud to WAU.
LAE - 1150 hours 21 Jan 1942 - AWA Radio station LAE advised by P/O Pursehouse at FINSCHHAFEN that approx 60 enemy planes were proceeding along the coast in the direction of LAE. Air raid siren immediatly sounded. At 1210 hours enemy fighters came in from the sea and attacked LAE township area and particularly Guinea Airways hangars and stores with machine gun and cannon fire. A few minutes later a large formation of bombers approached from South-east direction. Approx seven bombing attacks were made. Anti-personnel and incendiary bombs were dropped folowed by high-explosive bombs. After each wave of bombers, fighters returned and continued to attack the township area with machine gun and cannon fire. The attacks were maintained by fighters for several minutes after departure of bombers. No action taken by NGVR during raid. Enemy force estimated at 26 Fighters and Bombers. At 1255 hours - Raid ended.
DAMAGE - (Buildings, etc) Guinea Airways hangars, workshops and stores completely destroyed and power plant completely destroyed. Hotel, Government Offices, Burns Philp and Company's store and numerous houses and Guinea Airways staff quarters damaged by bomb blast and Machine Gun fire.
Aircraft Lost - 3 engined Ford 4 - AT owned by Guinea Airways; 2 single engined Junkers W.34. 1 Stinson Land plane SR7-B. 1 Stinson Seaplane SR9-FM and 1 Fox Moth. Aerodrome not seriously damaged.
Casualties - Nil. Capt Jenyns, 2IC NGVR conferred with Administrator immediatly after the raid and it was decided that Government and civilian population should be immediatly evacuated from the township to a hidden position in the bush, and that NGVR would stand by at LAE until this has been completed. Guard placed on aerodrome to watch for enemy activity. In view of the necessity for conserving foodstuffs etc NGVR assembled for duty with the exception of certain men assisting the Administration Party, all motor transport available assembled, and transport of foodstuffs, etc from the Burns Philps' store and stores at aerodrome out along Markham Road was commenced early in the afternoon (with the view of conserving all foodstuffs etc). This work was continued throughout the night. Stores distributed along Markham Road temporarily in various houses and under tarpaulins in the bush. Work hampered by heavy rain, which rendered Markham Road practically impassable after the first five miles, also owing to desertion of native labour, necessitating all handling of stores etc being done by NGVR personnel. At BULOLO - 8MD Port Moresby asked per radio to supply additional 200,000 rounds Mark VII ammunition, remainder hand granades and supply of rifle grenades. Unable to contact LAE on afternoon of 21 Jan 1942. No doctor there. Dr McKena proceed to LAE in Fox Moth aircraft, found no casulaties, proceeded on to SALAMAUA, then to WAU.
At 0600hours 22 Jan 1942 Junkers G3, Ford and Junkers W.34 transport aircraft proceed to LAE from WAU to evacuate civilians to Port Moresby. Only 4 (?) civilians located at LAE. Planes returned to WAU and thence to Port Moresby. HQ BULOLO advised to be prepared to clear runway at SALAMAUA for Hudson Bombers at short notice (radio ex 8MD). Advised 8MD unable to contact SALAMAUA until 0900 hours 23 Jan 1942. Instructions from Port Moresby to prepare LAE, SALAMAUA and MADANG aerodromes for demolition forthwith. LAE and SALAMAUA advised accordingly and informed the a miner was being sent to each centre to prepare demolitions. MADANG also advised and instructions given for method of demolition. Suggested to 8MD that full mobilisation of NGVR including Government officials be made immediatly. Commercial WT channels normal with the exception of LAE/BULOLO circuit. LAE on emergency 42.5 metres working VJZ. Only army communication this area, BULOLO/MORESBY. 8MD requested details of petrol and oil stocks still remaining in MADANG, SALAMAUA and LAE. Approval granted from 8MD for expenditure of 300 Pounds for construction of Operational HQ and store depots.
23 Jan 1942. Instructions from 8MD to advise SALAMAUA to clear aerodrome immediately - 8MD unable to contact. 8MD advised later the same day that RAAF now in touch with SALAMAUA, Drome had been temporarily cleared, and no action by HQ NGVR necessary. Fox Moth left for Port Moresby 0600hrs (GAL) Total strength all areas NGVR and attached personnel at date was 12 Officers and 327 ORs - Total 339. Instructions from 8MD to mobilize NGVR immediatly, SALAMAUA advised. MADANG advised. 8MD advised all W/T communication with coast dead - no details. MADANG instructed to collect two W/T sets in custody of D.O. and foreward to BULOLO by air. Radio to 8MD - The Aerodrome is OK. BL175. Instructions passed on to LAE, SALAMAUA and MADANG branches of Bank of NSW to destroy, in extreme emergency, all notes, war savings certificates, traveller's cheques, circular L/Cs in the presence of suitable witnesses. No 2 Platoon (Bulwa) under Sgt Jocumsen instructed to proceed to LAE area and join LAE Detachment in LAE itself if still in occupation by our troops, or to assist in fighting a rear-guard action if necessary. General intention is to hold a line GABENSIS/WAMPIT and to keep the enemy from getting in last foothills. If enemy remain in MARKHAM VALLY, harassing tactics are to be adopted.
24 Jan 1942. Requested by Signal 8MD to commence immediatly listening watch on 4775. Advised by MADANG that after the air attack (bombing and MG fire) civilians have left MADANG and are now in the vicinity of AMELE en route to RAMU. NGVR are still in contact with MADANG. Instructions requested. Advised 8MD have taken over stocks of BP's BULOLO Branch and B.G.D. in view of the uncertainty of the supply position. Admin taking over all supplies in WAU area. 8MD requested to forward supplies of flour immediatly. Above action confirmed by 8MD radio Q57 on 24 Jan 1942 and advised flour and ammo being sent by RAAF plane first opportunity. Administrator left for Port Moresby per Moth aircraft (24 or 25 Jan 1942) Advised 8MD of petrol stocks at LAE and SALAMAUA as under (approx): LAE - 300,000 gals SALAMAUA - 250,000 gals. Oil stocks not known.
Aircraft - Advised 8MD plane required immediatly to collect radio transmitters ex MADANG and place on watching stations, and also means of communication with the coast. Only plane in district required by Admin.
Chinese and Malays - Requested permission from 8MD to recruit Chinese and Malays for transport and medical duties.
25 Jan 1942 - 8MD advised no news had been received from force at RABAUL since early 23 Jan 1942 and enquired whether possible to send patrols from this district to contact and report. Suggested to 8MD AWA try to contact Pondo or O'Dwyer if Bainings. MADANG Detachment instructed to remain in MADANG to report daily on sign of occupation and to destroy what can't be removed. Civilians to carry on to RAMU. All civilians at BULWA and BULOLO were moved during the night into Edie Creek. NGVR WAU withdrawn outside lmits of WAU town area. Also advised 8MD that they could contact TALASEA or GASMATTA, they might get in touch within six days by canoe along the coast. Legal Officer 8MD requested to advise whether NGVR had power to over-ride Administration. Legal Officer suggested NGVR assume all necessary authority.
26 Jan 1942 - Advised 8MD of stores and supplies in order to enable NGVR to carry on without further support. 8MD advised that approx 15 Malays and Chinese being recruited for hospital and transport work.
27 Jan 1942 - Authority granted from 8MD to compulsorily call up for military service all males of European origin, 18 to 45 years of age. Such personnel are to be medically fit, and subject to the discretion of the NGVR as to men required for essential services. Advised 8MD following declared essential services- (a) Medical Services (b) Administration Field Staff and (c) Mechanics serving Aeroplanes. RAAF advised LAE aerodrome not sufficiently obstructed - requested permanent obstruction be arranged immediatly. Advised 8MD further to radio BL180 of 24 Jan 1942 that light plane urgently required for adequate communication between coast and HQ.
28 Jan 1942 - Disposition of Command as at 28 Jan 1942 advised to 8MD. MADANG Detachment instructed to remain at MADANG as standing patrol to report all enemy movements, maintain 24 hourly listening watch. Instructions from 8MD that all possible food and supplies at MADANG be moved inland and the remainder to be prepared for destruction by fire. Aerodrome and runway to be destroyed immediatly. MADANG advised by radio B1213 on 29 Jan 1942. MADANG detachment instructed to forward situation reports per W/T eash day to HQ BULOLO at 0600 hrs and 1750 hrs. Asked 8MD (legal officer) whether men, who when called up, fail to comply can be immediatly arrested, or must seven days apply.
29 Jan 1942 - Convoy reported forty miles North-North-East of SALAMAUA (radio BL214 on 29 Jan 1942) to 8MD. MADANG advised six ships reported north of SALAMAUA moving in the direction of MADANG (radio BL215) Advised MADANG that authority is given to call up all males of European origin 18 to 45. 8MD advised (radio O2123 on 29 Jan 1942) that RAAF reported good visibilty in area but after search nil sightings. Requested that information be checked and 8MD advised urgently. Pilot Wild reported when over SALAMAUA at 1115 hrs sighted convoy of six ships steaming in line with larger ship about 5 miles further out to sea. They were about 15 miles south-east of SALAMAUA. Pilot Bryce reported at 1245 hrs when over SALAMAUA saw black line on sea about 40 miles N N East in direction of FINSCHHAFEN. Requested RAAF plane bringing supplies should take more explosives from BULOLO to Beach - Fox Moth too small. (radio BL211 to 8MD) Capt Jenyns - LAE Detachment instructed by radio to carry out instructions re LAE immediatly. Radio to MADANG detachmentasking for immediate advice whether Chugg"s transmitter in operation and possibilities of contacting BULOLO HQ on 5270 kc with view of establishing 24 hr service. OC LAE detachment (Major Jenyns) instructed to destroy LAE auredrome and in regard to disposition of troops in LAE area.
30 Jan 1942 - 87 new recruits enrolled. Large number more to be medically examined. (radio BL224 to 8MD) AERODROMES - Instructions ex 8MD - In emergency aerodromes not to fall into enemy hands without main demolition. Aerodromes to remain open until evacxuation of civilians completed. SALAMAUA drome required by RAAF for operational purposes. Request to requisition MAL Fox Moth aircraft approved by 8MD. NGVR to take over immediatly. MADANG advised all clear at 6am. Aerodrome runway destroyed, and stores prepared for firing. 8MD advised accordingly. MADANG advised frequency 6870 KC. Can contact BULOLO HQ daily between 0700 and 1200 hrs and 1300 to 1800 hrs. Continuous watch to be brought into operation later. New organisation for Unit being brought into operation - (a) Battalion HQ with Signals, Intelligence, Pioneer, Transport and Medical Sections. Three Rifle Companys with HQ and three Platoons each. One MMG Company with HQ and two Platoons. Requested approval from HQ 8MD. Administration queried legality of call up (radios A65, A78, and BL208) BL230 - requested 8MD to advise Admin that call up is official. (Radio to 8MD requesting use of MAL Moth 31 Jan 1942 in priority to Admin) Reply from 8MD - "Use National Security Regulations to obtain use of aircraft for purpose indicated in your radio". MADANG advised HQ that local AWA operator moving inland. Rfn Monfries keeping schedule until new post established. Jap flying boat Series 43 over apparently on recce between coast and WAU first sighted 1120 hrs. Over WAU 1150 to 1240 hrs. One bomb dropped at WAU near Stephen's Aviation hangar - did not explode. 8MD advised that call up authorised by AHQ - suggested consult Niall (admin) who had conferred with military authorities in Port Moresby. 20 Watt Transmitter now operating on 7114 KC at base camp. Working with BULWA a BULOLO. Call sign MEK and MEB and MEL respectively. Advised MADANG hourly schedules would be maintained commencing 0815 hours 31 Jan 1942 until contact made. BULOLO HQ to reply on 15240 KC. Supplies requested from Moresby as per radio BL 229, 30 Jan 1942. Administration advised by Civil Aviation Capt Burgess that they had use of M.A.L. Moth prior to military authorities. Advised Moresby that this plane is required urgently from daylight 31 Jan 1942 for transportation of explosives and the establishment radio and other communications, and that 8MD instruct Administration to this effect. 8MD advised possible bomb dropped in WAU was delayed action. Asked that steps be taken to move aircraft that might be in danger zone, including damaged Lockheed airline. Advised 8MD that 4 more new wireless operators required to carry out existing and instal new channels. Message from MADANG that proposed withdraw to NOBANOB when all foodstuffs remved. From this point possible to cover more coast, including ALEXISHAFEN. Advised MADANG OK provided contact maintained per W/T. Instructions sent per Fox Moth aircraft to Capt Lyon, LAE Detachment, as follows - (1) Destruction of LAE aerodrome to be completed. (2) All stores left in town to be collected ready for transport to Sugar-loaf. (3) Pinnace 'GNAIR' to be made ready for use immediatly. (4) If necessary owing to enemy activity all stores to be destroyed, but not otherwise. (5) Capt LYON and party to remain in LAE for observation purposes until relieved.
1 Feb 1942 9 Japanese bombers atacked WAU 0740 hours. Aerodrome and surroundings heavily bombed. Lockheed under repair in Stephens' hangar escaped. No raid on BULOLO.
DAMAGE - 6 bombs on drome leaving craters 8 ft diameter. GAL store destroyed. Stephens' hanger badly damaged. Numerous other buildings damaged and Power lines destroyed in several places.
Casualties - Nil Killed Mr P Maloney (civilian) injured with severe thigh injuries. NG2350 - HALL, Alfred Robert, slightly injured. W. Paslow, Civilian, slight injuries to back and One Chinese with severe head injuries. WAU drome ready for use by aircraft. 8MD advised.
2 Feb 1942 Requested HQ Port Moresby to forward stores etc urgently required by us per evacuation plane, which had been arriving WAU empty. LAE detachment instructed to transfer all stores across river Markham from Nadzab at earliest opportunity. Instructions from 8MD that WAU aerodrome to remain intact for time being, but would probably have to be destroyed in a few days' time. 8MD suggested possibility of ploughing and flooding drome.
New Britain evacuation: Lieut HITCHCOCK and one NCO and one OR who knew the country between Wide Bay, Open Bay and Rabaul volunteered to land from flying boat and contact Rabaul Force, to be picked up at time and point agreed upon. 8MD advised radio BL/254. Two platoons of A Company under Capt JD Simpson left BULOLO to join thier Platoon at present in Markham Valley.
3 Feb 1942 New Britain Evacuation: 8MD acknowledged receipt of our radion BL254 but considered it inadvisable to risk flying boat in northern waters until position clearer. Suggested possibility of reaching garrison by small schooner from mainland moving along south coast of New Britain. 8MD advised P/O Pursehouse, OC watching station at Finschhafen anticipated being withdrawn by Administration. Requested us to endeavour to replace by other W/T operators and forward additional stores.
4 Feb 1942 Advised 8MD that Admin had agreed to leave P/O Pursehouse at Finschhafen for short period. Advised 8MD that in order to keep up adequate communication with all branches essential to have plane. Able to supply pilot and mechanics locally if necessary. New Britain Evacuation: Advised 8MD preparing to send patrol by primace "Gnair" shortly. W/T Communication: Requested authority ex 8MD to take over portable AWA set by Admin in Lae area with NGVR operators. Admin had advised A/D District Services to proceed Wau and bring set with him. This set and set at Madang only ones available for coastal communications until plane available to collect others. As Admin officials had retired to Edie Creek and Madang suggested control of area be taken over by military. Essential some action be taken to define powers immediately without communications and co-operation impossible to carry on efficiently. Lae detachment advised hoped to commence shifting stores across Markham River in accordance with instructions our radio BL 250.
5 Feb 1942. Lae Detachment instructed that W/T set not to leave beach under any circumstances, as only means of warning from beach. One section to proceed immediatly with W/T set to point E3383 ref Map Morobe Grid portion 1 to establish watching station and report to NGVR HQ any enemy movements by land or sea. (radio BL 267) Civil flying to Wau understood finished -- requested permission from 8 MD to destroy Wau drome leaving only Bulolo, which could be opened or closed in two minutes by means of wires operated by winches. (radio BL 270)
6 Feb 1942. Advised 8MD patrol to New Britain expected to leave Lae per pinnace "Gnair" tomorrow, also relief for P/O Pursehouse at Finschhafen. In reply to radio OS 2173 from 8MD advised that following were minimum supplied required:- 150 Ground Sheets; 1000 Boot Laces; 200 Hats; Quantity boot repair gear; 200 Hat Badges; 300 pr puttees; 200 Hat Bands; 450 pairs Stockings (long); 500 Chin Straps; 450 prs Socks; 480 Steel Helmets; 450 Towels; 500 pairs Boots; 900 Singlets.
9 Light Machine Guns (& spares); 6 T.S.Machine guns (& Spares); 100,000 rounds SAA Mk VII ; 75,000 rounds .45 cartridges; 140 magazines for LMG's.
7 Feb 1942 W/T Communications established with Ramu. Requested advise from 8MD as to whether in view of announcement per radio 4th Feb that call-up legalised, it powers of arrest now vested in CO and in what circumstances. Reference 8MD radio A 65, Deputy Administrator advised by Prime Minister he had powers to retain all men required for essential services.
8 Feb 1942 Enemy recce. Plane over Madang 1100 hours. One Bomb dropped. 1140 hours. departed easterly direction. Four-engined plane over LAE between 1000 and 1200 hours 8 Feb 1942, accompanied by fighter which flew low. From reports just to hand enemy carried out extensive aerial recce daily in Markham Valley between 21 Jan 1942 and 27 Jan 1942. Lt Hitchcock left BULOLO by Fox Moth for NADZAB in advance of his patrol to New Britain. Report on aeroplane engines and propellors help in BGD store at BULOLO forwarded to 8MD, and suggest to 8MD that if these were of value they should be removed at earliest possible moment owing to danger of destruction by enemy air attacks.
9 Feb 1942 HQ transferred from BULOLO to BULWA am 9 Feb 1942. Signals Section transferred to position approx 1 hour from Base Camp. Requested 8MD to requisition Ryan monoplane from Stephen's Aviation for work with this Unit. Reinforcement LAE and SALAMAUA detachments by A and B Companies completed.
10 Feb 1942 Advice from 8MD in reply to our radio BL 282 of 8 Feb 1942 stating CO NGVR has no power of arrest. No knowledge of power of Administration to retain men for essential services. Cpl Blake, Rfn Money and Rfn Blakely left BULWA to proceed by road to LAE to join Lt Hitchcock. Sig Walker and Kuster left with above party for relief of Finschhafen watching Station. News having been received of enemy occupation of Gasmatta, party despatched later in day to recall Cpl Blake and carry despatch to Lt Hitchcock cancelling patrol, also instructions for Finschhafen relief. Lt hitchcock to join returning LAE detachment and report back to HQ NGVR. Instructions to Capt Lyons, OC LAE area to contact Capt Simpson, OC A Company as soon as possible after his arrival in LAE area. After positions taken up by A Company, Capt Lyon to withdraw whole of his detachment and return with them to HQ NGVR at earliest opportunity.
11 Feb 1942 Advice from 8MD that Capt Townsend arriving WAU 12 Feb 1942 as Commandant's representative, and would deal with matters connecting with Administration and Army. W/T station at BUANGS instructed to listen for signals on 35 and 43 metres. Larged unidentified plane sighted from WAU 1045 hours approaching from direction of SALAMAUA. Flew around Mt Missum and proceed direction of LAE. Thought to be enemy recce.
12 Feb 1942 Instructions from 8MD that no further parties of civilians to proceed overland pending further instructions.
13 Feb 1942 LAE detachment instructed as under:- On completion of removal of stores across Markham, Capt Lyon and his Unit to report to HQ NGVR immediately. Capt Simpson to carry out instructions issued to him on departure. BASE CAMP RECCE :- Rfn J Cavanagh reported that after establishing signal camp he went on to the top of the range to the HQ of Suami Creek (elevation 6,570 Feet)- general direction SouthWest. Considered this point to be 16 miles distant and can be walked in 7 hours. Consider carriers would take two days to pack to first camp site, and halfway camp sited for that purpose. Halfway camp in rain forest area, thence to moss country.
14 Feb 1942 P/O Harris instructed to proceed to Finschhafen from Lae to assist P/O Pursehouse in coast watching station and native control. 8MD advised Fox Moth at Moresby available for use this Unit, but no pilot available there. Strength of Unit at date: Officers - 21; OR's 424; Total Strength - 445.
15 Feb 1942 Advice from Salamaua that drome at E 3372 not fit for use. Working parties employed to repair work - should be fair within one week. Salamaua detachment advise 6 Salamaua personnel under Lt Board leaving Salamaua for NGVR HQ 17 Feb 1942. Lae detachment instructed to withdraw personnel from base camp at Wago, as considered unnecessary at present.
16 Feb 1942 Instructions to OC A Company (Lae/Markham area) re operations in evet of enemy landing and re demolitions of machinery, motor transport, stores etc in Lae area which might be of value to enemy. Instructions to OC, 3 Platoon, A Company (Lt Tuckey) 1. Wampit Aerodrome to be kept open, but preperations to be made for closing at short notice, and guard to be stationed at Wampitt. 2. Gabansez aerodrome to be temporarily closed - to be opened and if required.
17 Feb 1942 Enemy Plane, possibly Mitsubishi type 97 twin-engine bombing, carried out recce over BULWA, BULOLO and WAU from 1045 to 1115 hours then headed towards SALAMAUA.
NEW BRITAIN EVACUATION : LAE Detachment instructed to despatch "Gnair" to Finschhafen immediatly,travelling by night, with Rfn Money and engineer for "Bavaria". "Gnair, "Bavaria and any other power craft available to remain at Finschhafen fully fuelled and extra rations to await direct instructions from Port Moresby. P/O Harris to take charge of expedition. Sgt Russell, Madang detachment instructed to comandeer immediatly "Stella", "Total" and all other power craft and have fully fuelled and extra rationed and medical supplies ready for immediate despatch upon advice NGVR HQ. Any engineer or other assistance required to be enforced. Sepik instructed to send all power craft to report to Sgt Russell Nagada. Madang instructed to keep a 24 hour listening watch on radio until otherwise instructed. Madang advised schooner "Nereus" arrived Alexishafen from Kavieng. Instructions requested. Madang was instructed that "Nereus to join other craft.
Demolitions: Instructions received from 8MD that plans to be made and instructions issued for possible demolition of all industrial plant. Following points stressed: 1. Gold dredging and hydro-electric plant and stores not to fall into enemy hands. 2. Demolition to be selective and to be applied to all key points. 3. Particular attention to what enemy needs most and what he will have most difficulty in replacing. 4. Premature demolitions to be avoided but experience shows that principal fault usually lies in leaving matters too late.
Aerodromes - BULOLO Advised 8MD that at least 30 minutes notice necessary from present date should use of BULOLO aerodrome be required.
18 Feb 1942 W/T wwatching station, Sugarloaf, Markham Area instructed to keep 24 hours listening watch on radio until further instructions. Advice from LAE that both "Gnair and "Bavaria" left for Finschhafen as instructed night of 18 Feb 1942.
19 Feb 1942 Advised 8MD in response to their radio G 2272 that preperations for demolition completed of all machine shops, plant, stores, cranes, frezing plants, oxygen plants, all garages, carpenters' shops and plant from and including BULOLO POWER HOUSE to UPPER BAIUNE POWER HOUSE. Similar preparations being made in WAU district. Key movable points being removed from Gold Dredging plant and all motor transport othan than required by essential services being collected and prepared for demolition. Adequate communications established between personnel responsible for demolitions and NGVR HQ to enable instant action. MADANG: Unidentified two-engined plane reconnoitred MADANG at 1300 hours.
21 Feb 1942 8MD requested confirmation of report received by them that German missionary Wagner escaped into bush and that search of premises revealed Nazi armband. Ford aircraft returned to BULOLO owing to bad weather. Advised 8MD leaving a.m. 22 Feb 1942.
22 Feb 1942 8MD advised Ford not returning BULOLO - delayed for examination. Ford left BULOLO for Port Moresby a.m. Bloxham arrived mouth of Buangs - 100 carriers with six days' rationds.
23 Feb 1942 Madang requested sailing orders as soon as possible as native crews endeavouring to desert Bloxham instructed to carry out patrols locally (mouth of Buangs) until further advised and conserve foods. Radio from 8MD "Radio present location distribution number of and equipment your troops stop Information needed urgently" (Radio G 2300) Informationas under radio to 8MD. (BL 359) - Lae/Buang area: 5 officers and 89 ORs - Equipped rifle bayonet, 2 Vickers guns 5 1 m.g., 8 TSMG Grenades. Salamaua Area: 4 Officers and 74 ORs - Equipped as above but with 2 Vickers,5 LMGs, 6 TSMG Grenades. Units in both areas widely separated and communications difficult. Wau/Bulolo/Bulwa area: 230 ORs with 23 ORs sick and number of light duty men being organised - Equipped with Rifle Bayonet, 4 Vickers Guns. Madang/Ramu area: 16 ORs; On Patrol: 7 ORs; Apparently attached RAAF (8MD): 8 ORs; Military Administration (attached): 15 ORs; TOTAL Officers and ORs: 471; 3 TSMG in stock. Of grand total 100 men only considered trained and balance includes many called up since 22 Jan 1942. Advised 8MD German missionary WAGNER escaped bush and search revealed Nazi arm band. Patrol endeavouring to arrest. Requested instructions as to general policy towards and action to be taken against missionaries of German origin and sympathies.
24 Feb 1942 Madang advised :- "Winon" and "Thetis" , "Nereus and "Totol" ready to sail. Trouble being experienced with some vessels owing to native desertions. 8MD advised Ford leaving Port Moresby for BULOLO 0700 hours 25 Feb 1942. Requested 8MD that RMO (Capt McKenna) be invested with necessary authority to permit of dischargeof men from Unit for medical reasons on his recommendation alone in view of difficulty experienced in evacuating members of Unit to *MD for Medical Board.
25 Feb 1942 8MD advised in view of result in case of Wagner, NGVR authorised to take following action in relation to all suspects resident in TNG. "CARRY OUT ANY SEARCH CONSIDERED NECESSARY AND IF CIRCUMSTANCES WARRANT SUCH ACTION PLACE OFFENDERS IN CUSTODY AND ADVISE THIS HQ". 8MD advised Ford leaving Moresby 2100 hours GMT 25 Feb 1942 for BULOLO.
26 Feb 1942 Ford delayed BULOLO owing to weather - advised 8MD leaving 0700 hours 27 Feb 1942.
27 Feb 1942 MADANG - Madang raided by 10 bombers 1415 hours. Light raid only. No casualties. Town and surrounding district later reconnoitred by single plane. 4 bombs near native prison. 5 or 6 on drome. Reconnaissaince plane later dropped 2 bombs on drome. Sgt Russell standing by awaiting instructions for expedition. NEW BRITAIN EXPEDITION - Moresby advised command of flotilla at discretion of Capt Townsend. Military Administration. Destination expected to be SAG SAG. First batch only fifty men. No indication yet of time of departure.
P/O Harris ordered to proceed with suitable number of craft along north coast and lie up west of Talasea to await party ex Rabaul numbering approximatly 180 men in vicinity of open Bay and now ordered to move west along north coast to contact Harris' flotilla. Harris to arrange to carry food from craft along the coast road to contact party.
28 Feb 1942 Instructions to Sgt Russell, Madang, re New Britain evacuation: ex Capt Townsend - All vessels ready to proceed immediatly by night stages via Long or Crown Island to Linga Linga Plantation and/or Galatia Island, Talasea and hide. Other vessels to follow as soon as ready. Exact whereabouts of men to be rescued not known but somewhere along the coast road to open Bay. Harris instructed to proceed direct from Finschhafen and be in command. If Harris not contacted, Madang flotilla to act independently. Small power craft to be taken on deck if possible to assist coast search and collect carriers and take food and medicines to meet men. Flottila to remain in hiding until men located and picked up by night. As vessels loaded to capacity, to proceed via Finschhafen to the mouth of Buangs road between LAE and SALAMAUA. "Stella" to carry sick and wounded only and to take no part in offensive operations. Sgt Russell advised "Your instruction now carried out." Re message from 8MD containing instructions for Harris (per radio G2332) advised Moresby that NGVR not in direct communication with Harris. 8MD to advise whether message sent by 8MD to him direct through Finschhafen, or whether arrangements to be made to relay message per runner from Madang. Message to 8MD "IS DROME OK FOR LANDING."
1 Mar 1942 Ford left BULOLO for Port Moresby 0630 hours. BULOLO bombed 1130-1230 hours by single plane after recce over whole valley including BULWA and WAU. 10 bombs on edge of drome (18" holes) Damage - Nil; Casualties - Nil. WAU combed by 9 planes at same time. 4 planes from direction SALAMAUA and 5 from direction MARKHAM. ABC broadcast yesterday that Father Glover operating this area and using WAU and BULOLO dromes. Requested 8MD to have imformation of this nature ruthlessly censored before being broadcast by ABC or given to press. Japanese raids follow immediatly upon broadcast of such information. Damage - Destroyed by fire and bomb blast - Guinea Airways Ltd office and quarters; 3 dwelling houses; Greenwood and Law's Store; Bank of New South Wales; WR Carpenter and Co Ltd Store; Church of England; Masonic Temple; Wau Club; Savoy Cafe; Wau Hotel Ltd - Bar Section; Burns Philp and Co Ltd - small oil store; Morobe motors; Colyer Watson Ltd and Warden's Office - Geological Section. 5 Mar 1942 Madang detachment to send one medium craft from NAGADA flotilla to Reibeck Bay, New Britain under orders from P/O Harris. ETC Ford 0600 6 July 1942. Madang advised flotilla consisting Nereus, Thetis, Totol, Winon sailing individually today. Sgt Emery and 6 OR's distributed amongst vessels. LAE - bombed by 4 twin-engined bombers at 0915 hours. Again bombed at 1020 hours by 5 twin-engined bombers. Total of 35 bombs dropped. Air raid on BULOLO 1050-1120 hours by five Japanese twin-engined bombers. Damage to buildings etc - BGD Machine Shop; No2 Hardware store; Electrical shop and store; Garage; Oxy Acetylene plant and building and Carpenters shop All owned by Bulolo Dredging Ltd and all completly destroyed by bombs and fire. Aircraft damaged - Ford 3 engined transport plane (RAAF) - Superficially damaged.
6 Mar 1942 BULOLO damaged by three Japanese bombers 1235-1255 hours. Damage Nil. Casualties Nil. Priority Radio from 8MD as under - "AT ONE TWO FIVE FIVE HOURS MARCH SIXTH AIR RECONNAISSANCE SIGHTED CONVOY COMPRISING ONE CRUISER ONE LARGE TRANSPORT AND SEVEN SMALLER SHIPS OFF CAPE BALLI WEST OF GASMATA STOP CONVOY WAS PROCEEDING WEST." W/T section at SUGARLOAF (Buags) OP and MADANG Detachment advised as above and instructed to keep 24 hourly watch without fail until further informed. New Britain Evacuation - Madang advised that all craft already departed. One schooner in front of main convoy as scout. 7 Mar 1942 Radio from 8MD - "FURTHUR TO I 2382 STOP AIR RECONNAISSANCE REPORTED FROM SALAMAUA THAT ENEMY CONVOY SIGHTED AT 0630 HOURS MARCH SEVENTH STOP POSITION 08 DEGREES 06 MINUTES SOUTH 149 DEGREES 08 MINUTES EAST STOP COURSE 219 DEGREES SLOW SPEED COMPRISING ONE CRUISER FOUR DESTROYERS SIX TRANSPORT. " LAE bombed 1130-1200 hours. Bombing obscured by mist and rain.
8 Mar 1942 - Early in morning Radio advice from OP at Sugarloaf (Buangs Area) that four vessels approaching LAE and five approaching SALAMAUA. Bombing commenced at LAE 0615 hours. SALAMAUA being shelled from the sea. Two other ship in gulf, making total of eleven. 8MD advised. 8MD advised per radio that aerial roconnaissance over SALAMAUA this morning reported presence four cruisers and several transports close to SALAMAUA, also small boat plying into SALAMAUA. Runway (drome) appeared intact. Reports received by RAAF that bombing and shelling in progress and boats putting off from transports at 0904 hours. Enemy aircraft over BULOLO/WAU area at 1000 hours. Instructions from Port Moresby to destroy WAU drome. MADANG and RAMU detachments advised of Japanese occupation of LAE and SALAMAUA. MADANG instructed to keep in touch with NGVR HQ but if this failed, to use own discretion. Madang to war flotilla. Unable to contact our W/T station vicinity of LAE after 1000 hours. Advised 8MD that base being moved to Reference D7726 map Morobe Portion 1. Radio to be off air from 2000 hours 8 Mar 1942 to 0800 hours 9 Mar 1942. Demolition of power houses, bridges, freezers, cranes and benzine from WAU to BAIUNE being carried out. Valley clouded all day, but considerable air activity throughout day above. All Bulolo Valley dromes being demolished. Military Adminstration joining with NGVR.
11 Mar 1942 Mesage from SALAMAUA area states tanker arrived LAE 11 April.
15 Mar 1942 MADANG bombed by 8 Japanese Aircraft. Approximatly 30 bombs dropped. Damage - Township only. Chinatown burnt. Other damage slight. Casualties - Nil.
Demolitions in Wau - Bulolo valley completed. Owing to transport difficulties and no portable W/T set unable to operate radio. Contact now resumed. Constant enemy air activity lower Markham area. No report yet of contact from forward posts there. Believed slight contact Salamaua. Reports received heavy enemy troop conentrations on Markham with rubber boats for crossing river and armoured vehicles. Also reported to have parachute troops with them. According to native reports German missionaries with Japanese andhave all the local natives working for them, and natives have disclosed our positions. Believed to be approximatly 1,000 Japanese in Salamaua. Reported tha enemy questioning natives as to route to WAU from SALAMAUA. Requested immediate air assitance from 8MD on Markham.
17 Mar 1942 Owing to overwhelming enemy forces am withdrawing to west side BULOLO valley - 8MD advised.
18 Mar 1942 Enemy strength SALAMAUA now estimated by Lt Vial to be 300, living in Chinese houses at Kila. Enemy Guard posted on bridge across Frisco river. Salamaua Aerodrome tested by Japanese by means of cars driven up runway. NGVR scouts obtaining further information.
19 Mar 1942 Believed that enemy has attacked through the Buangs and has entered top of Snake by Mapos. Air support requested from 8MD. Troops understood to be fighting - no report yet received. Message from 8MD "RELY ON YOU TO APOPT UTMOST AGGRESSIVE TACTICTS ENEMY AREAS". Enemy understood to be employing local natives to construct footbridge over river Frisco. Enemy told natives that proposed to advance on WAU. Reported from Salamaua that enemy living aboard grounded ships, and Officers commanding enemy living in last house north end of isthmus. 8MD advised that LAE being used as main air base by the enemy. Enemy recce plane over MADANG - departed westerly direction.
20 Mar 1942 8MD asked us to nominate suitable place where mesages or packages could safely be dropped if need arises, also to advise type of ground signal which will be employed.
21 Mar 1942 Radio ex 8MD "FOR SIGNALS. REFERENCE YOUR BL 442 DATED 19/3. WE ARE CALLING YOU ON FREQUENCY 5200K STROKE. ADVISE FREQUENCY ON WHICH YOU CALL US. WE HAVE MAINTAINED CONTINUOUS LISTENING WATCH SINCE YOU MOVED STATION AND HAVE ALSO CALLED YOU AT HOURLY INTERVALS WITHOUT RESULT. PENDING SATISFACTORY RESTORING THIS CHANNEL CONTINUE TO USE COMMERCIAL CHANNELS".
22 Mar 1942 Revised estimated by Lt Vial enemy strength SALAMAUA 100 or less. No movement along WAU track. Radio to 8MD requesting RAAF to drop at BULWA following - TSMG's and ammo; Rifle Granades; Discharger Cups; Watches - 12; Compasses (Prismatic) - 12; .455 Revolver Ammo and Mail. Ground signal - 20 ft white cross. Advice per radio from RAMU that ten sick evacuated to Mt Hagen. Glover planning to fly to Australia to collect large evacuation plane on 26 Mar 1942.
24 Mar 1942 Advised by RAMU that Father glover in Fox Moth aircraft VH-UDD taken off for Mt Hagen. Plans to fly Horn Island 25 Mar 1942. Advised 8MD accordingly. Radio ex 8MD - "DOES PRESENT POSITION MAIN BODY YOUR FORCE CONFORM WITH ROLE AS OUTLINED IN OUR I 2382 OF 6 Mar 1942 STOP NECESSARY YOU KEEP THIS CONSTANTLY IN MIND."
25 Mar 1942 Advised 8MD that present position this area as effects Moresby as follows:- 1) Markham Valley occupied by large number enemy troops as far as NADZAB on northern bank of river. NGVR patrolling southern bank with scouts across river. Considered impossible enemy force proceed overland to Port Moresby from this point. Possible intention to concentrate troops to make large dromes in Markham Valley for purpose transporting paratroops to rear of Port Moresby force. Also establishment air base. 2) SALAMAUA garrisoned for shipping and possible seaplane base. 3) Only possible routes to PAPUA from this area are south taken by McMullen (Otibanda - Ekua - Bulldog) and alternative route which connects with this. These are covered. Only likely roads known for use by eemy attack on Port Moresby are in Papua from BUNA or GONA via Kokoda or possible route from MAMBARI BAY through Ioma to kokoda. Also a track from WARIA to IOMA, but unlikely this would be used. 4) To replenish supplies to forward troops this area from four to five days from ration base. Establishing radio communication with forward area shortly at Morobe Portion One A 9301. New Britain Evacuation - Madang advised all boats now returned from convoy. Men evacuated sent to RAMU. 8MD advised that quantity of TSMG's ammo, compasses, watches and mail being dropped this area per parachute - time to be advised later. Flying Officer W Wackett, RAAF reported to NGVR forward patrol after having been shot down in flying operations this area. Advised 8MD enemy using Ref Morobe 1 E 4547 as base for small naval seaplane. Madang - Sgt Russell advised watch being maintained near MADANG. Most of Madang detachment proceeded inland with stores.
26 Mar 1942 MADANG raided by 10 Japanese Bombers. Several fires started. Signal Section instructed to report back to previous location with transmitter and equipment.
Radio from 8MD as under - "INFORMATION RECEIVED HERE INDICATING DIVERGENCE BY YOU FROM ROLE STOP YOUR ROLE AS FOLLOWS: A) MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH ENMEY LAND FORCES AND OBTAIN INFORMATION HIS MOVEMENT DISPOSITION AND INDENTIFICATION REPORTING RESULTS HERE. INFORMATION CANNOT BE OBTAINED WITHOUT FIGHTING. B)PREVENT HIS MOVEMENT INLAND FROM SALAMAUA AND FROM LAE NADZAB AREA. HOPE NEAR FUTURE SEND ADDITIONAL TROOPS AND DO NOT WANT GROUND GIVEN UP TO ENEMY UNNECESSARILY. RAMU detachment advised radio watch installed on Markham Valley at ONGA. All Mission teachers withdrawn from Gadsup area.
New Britain evacuation - Sgt Emery, Madang detachment advised evacuation carried out successfully. About 200 soldiers and civilians rescued and transferred to inter island vessel now en route Australia. Pinnace "Gnair" also proceeded south. As more evacuees believed still to be in New Britain, requested that publications of details of evacuation be suppressed so as not to jeopardize further rescue attempts. P/O Harris in touch with Madang detachment. Eye witnesses reported ill treatment and execution 120 known prisoners similar Hong Kong atrocities. 8MD advised.
1 Apr 1942 LAE area - Forward scouts report enemy line extends from B 3000 through poultry farm on Markham Road to E 3797. Number of enemy believed stationed at farm (1 and half miles from LAE), Ref Map Marobe 1.
2 Apr 1942 In respose to request from Port Moresby for information as to location of our forward patrols and stores dumps, also best method of contacting NGVR units, for guidance of RAAF pilots shot down LAE/SALAMAUA area, advised as follows - Location of forward units - Ref map Marobe Portion 1 - Markham area:- (south side of Markham) Ref A 9815; B 0502; A 9500; D 8793; D 8677; D 9475; E 0477 and D 9665. Salamaua Area - Ref E 361. Contact by following inland tracks, asking directions local natives. For particulars SALAMAUA area, south bank of Frisco and employment pidgin phrases, see Lieut Owners, now Survey Department, 8MD. Our patrols also operating forward from positions given above.
4 Apr 1942 Radio ex Port Moresby - "YOUR BL 519 EXCELENT REPORT. GIVE MAXIMUM INFORMATION TO ALLOW MOST EFFECTIVE OFFENSIVE ACTION BY AIR FROM HERE. YOU SHOULD CONSIDER MINOR ACTIONS TO BE CARRIED OUT IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR AIR RAIDS WITH OBJECT PRISONERS INDENTIFICATIONS DESTRUCTIONS AND INSTALLATIONS AND KILL REPEAT KILL JAPANESE."
5 Apr 1942 Madang detachment instructed to contact P/O Harris and arrange supply all requirments stores etc, also transmitter. Full co-operation to be maintained with P/O Harris. 9 unidentified bombers vicinity BULOLO valley 1100 hours.
6 Apr 1942 Radio advice from Port Moresby that all NGVR personnel proceeding to Port Moresby without writtten authority treated as deserters. Advice from Lt Hitchcock that practically no enemy activity SALAMAUA. Sgt McAdam acting as scout Salamaua area.
7 Apr 1942 Forward patrols LAE area confirmed that enemy not more than two miles from sea up the Markham River. Native rports state enemy occupying buildings in LAE and Chinatown, new houses which have been built near the aerodrome by the Markham road and Jacobsen's plantation. Enemy HQ at Webb's house, between Hotel and sea. One 6" gun and A/A guns between Webb's house and beach. Enemy aircraft sheltered under trees at the northern end of the drome. Advised 8MD on advice from Lae forward area that NADZAB safe for landing troops and stores if RAAF attack Lae same time. Necessary to cut grass on drome which would take two days. Obstacles on drome could be removed in 30 minutes.
8 Apr 1942 Adviced CO Lae forward area that inadvisable any action be considered against enemy until receipt of message now going foward by runner. Radio ex 8MD enquiring to ehat extent WAU drome demolished and period required to repair for use of heavy aircraft. Same information required concerning SLATE CREEK drome. Advised 8MD on CO's instructions that Capt Umphelby in charge SALAMAU area, carrying out intensive recce with a view of offensive action. Major Jenyns in charge HQ base and lines of communication which extend over 100 miles of very rough country, all stores and supplies having to be carried. CO personally taken charge Lae/Markham area. Instructions per radio from 8MD that any civilian and AIF personnel not in RAMU should proceed to Mt Hagen from where evacuation by air will be arranged. W/O Brechin advised accordingly. Advised 8MD WAU drome could be repaired for use in 36 hours. Doubtful whether SLATE CREEK could take heavy aircraft owing to recent rains. Invesigation being made. Cpl Goodwin J A accidently killed 8 Apr 1942 at MUNUM whilst instruction in weapon training. (NG 2353).
Advised 8MD reinforcements required LAE/MARKHAM area. If by air suggest landing NADZAB drome saving at least a week's time in arrival. Markham River crossing difficult at present. Reinforcements will need to bring own stores and supplies. Forward Patrols LAE area report that enemy line extends from approximately B 3000 through Jacobsen's plantation and Emery's plantation to E 3797. From present information enemy strength estimated at lat 1800. According to native reports an A/A gun on road near house at Jacobsen' manned by eight men. In LAE all house have twenty to thirty men living in them. Some Japanese living in Chinatown, where a number of Chinese held as prisoners. Japanese have also pitched camp. Suggested to Adminitration that Sub-District Office be established at Gabsonkek under control WO Clark for control of natives in WAINE - ERAP area. Agreed to by Military Aministration, WO Clark to have full control all administrative duties Markham areas with HQ at site selected by him.
10 Apr 1942 Reported by natives boats crew who bought launch from Samarai to Alexishafen via Finschhafen that no Japanese seen at Finschhafen.
11 Apr 1942 8MD advised that personnel at Kudgeru forming base for movement of small reinforcements overland, some reinforcements having already been despatched. Reports from LAE forward area state that ... On 23rd March enemy bomber coming from south crashed in junction of Watut with Markham. One member of crew survived and was taken to Lae by natives. On night of 8th April enemy bomber crashed at Yanga. Engines salvaged by Japanese next day. Aerial activity from LAE drome appears to begin from 0630.
12 Apr 1942 Advised 8MD SLATE CREEK drome 600yards x 30 yards - could be extended to 900 yards within two weeks of advise. Aerodrome in fair condition. WAU or BULOLO most suitable aerodromes for medium sized aircraft. Reported from Salamaua that one A/A gun on hill above European hospital, Salamaua. W/T sets in operation:- EWO RAMU 5990 Kc; O'Brien at HAGEN working RAMU; PET probably MADANG area 5990 Kc working SUM; Brechin at ONGA working RAMU; GIL Forward Markham working SUM; TAF forward SALAMAUA working SUM; Kudgeru 7114 Kc wouking SUM; also Viall. Lieut Howard, 1st Independent Company, arrived at Bulwa HQ NGVR after travelling overland ex 8MD via BULLDOG. Remainder of platoon following. Party consists of specially trained raiding personnel - approximately 50 men. Expert small recce party arriving Operational HQ LAE forward area 23 Apr 1942.
13 Apr 1942 Madang advised that watch post at KAURIS, 274 degrees west from Madang wharf, 225 degrees south west of highest point of Nobanob. Itinerary arranged for Lieut Howard, 1st Independent Company. To return to Wau 14 April, arranging for accomodation of platoon at Wau. 15th Apr 1942 WAU to KUDGERU to confer with Major Stanfield to organise aircraft observation and to organise movement of platoon in parties to WAU. 16th April returning to Wau. 17th April Wau to Bulwa. 18th April leaving Bulwa for LAE area to make recce. Estimated time completion of recce - two weeks. MADANG advised remainder of detachment under Sgt Emery now proceeding RAMU district. O.P. consisting of 5 men left MADANG area.
14 Apr 1942 Daily situation reports required from SALAMAUA forward area by CO, to be re-transmitted to him in LAE forward area.

16 Apr 1942 Port Moresby advised mail to be dropped at MUBO aerodrome (Salamaua area) from Hudson aircraft. Salamaua patrols report no enemy our side of Francisco river. Very little enemy activity Salamaua district. Message from Leiut Howard advising he will not be leaving BULWA Saturday -- awaiting arrival of men from KUDGERU. Observations of recce patrol, LAE area:- At LAE planes begin warming up at 0530 hours. constant watch over LAE maintained by at least two fighters at 5,000 to 8,000 feet between 0617 hours and 1815 hours daily. No watch on very dull days or during heavy rain. RAMU advised civilians ex RAMU and AIF evacuees now en route to HAGEN.
17 Apr 1942 Kitty Hawk fighter shot down by Japanese fighter on hill near confluence Watut and Bulolo Rivers at 0730 hours 17 Apr 1942. Japanese aircraft fired one burst and smoke came from Kitty Hawk which tried to pancake but crashed into hill. Pilot incinerated. Engine No. 37881-00 M I; Fuselage No: P 40E. At SALAMAUA Japanese flying boats observed to refuel at Shell Company dump on beach. Radio station at Salamaua apparently not in use. Japanese pinnace kept at Parsee Point at village. Three American and one Australian Air Force men brought down at Kila captured by Japanese and taken to LAE. Japanese working MAL hangar living Sutcliffe's house and house next door, also in Court House along to hospital and FT O'Dea's house. Japanese HQ BP Kila. No bridge guard on Francisco River. Requested that stores, socks, sand shoes, shirts, shorts nets requested per radio 17th Apr 1942 be dropped at NADZAB drome. Some personnel barefooted. If Lae/Markham area considered unsuitable, suggested to be dropped at WAMPIT drome. MADANG advised that schooner "Edith" and launch brought Manus garrison to Madang still at Madang -- request permission to destroy if vessels not required.
Squadron Leader J F Jackson CO Fighter Squadron Port Moresby shot down between Lae and Salamaua 10th Apr 1942, reported to NGVR patrol at Mapros. Advice per runner.
19 Apr 1942 Plane over MADANG 1045 hours (unidentified) Reported from Salamaua area no enemy from Kong Point to Busuma. Pilot S W Brown captured 11th April taken to LAE. His plane came down on beach Kong Point and salvaged by enemy. Salamaua drome intact. Instructions from 8MD WAU drome to be made serviceable. Bomber to be sent to Wau to collect Sqn Ldr Jackson. Temporary obstructions to be placed on drome at all times when not in use. Suggested to OC, B Company that no action be taken against enemy in SALAMAUA area until our forces LAE area ready for similar action, in order to ensure surprise.
20 Apr 1942 Estimated training of raiding party LAE area will be completed by 30th April. Advised RAAF 8MD WAU drome will be completed by 0800 21st Apr 1942. Lieut Hitchcock advised investigation made of Rfn Forrester's report. Lokanu and beach natives have hidden their females from enemy and assured us that enemy have not found their hideout. Houses in trees are native lookouts. Two light-skinned natives wearing green trousers were mistaken for Japanese.
22 Apr 1942 Message from 8MD - "OPERATIONS NOT REPEAT NOT TO BE UNDERTAKEN IN LAE AND SALAMAUA AREAS WITHOUT AUTHORITY THIS HEADQUARTERS. CONSIDERED ADVISABLE AWAIT HELP FROM OTHER UNITS NOW PROCEEDING TO YOUR AREA. ACTIVE RECONNAISSANCE PATROLS WILL BE MAINTAINED AND GUIDES INCOMING FORCES TRAINED." OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING. Above radioed to CO. Salamaua patrols report Enemy High Command party of ten arrived per 4-engined flying boat at Salamaua 19th Apr 1942 and inspected Salamaua Aerodrome, W/T Station and Kila. Departed same day. Message from 8MD instructing Sgt Russell to take two available boats including EDITH to Jones at Wewak to assist him patrolling his area. Serious native riots reported Wewak district. MADANG detachment advised moving to better O P post at Kamba situated approximatly 2 miles distant and bearing 259 degrees west of church on Nobanob Hill.
23 Apr 1942 Enemy raid on KOMIATUM on 23rd Apr 1942. NGVR retired MUBO without casualties. At least two enemy killed. Raiding party came from LAE with two civilians, thought to be missionaries. One guided raid, other supervising labour on drome. Recce patrol reached boundry LAE township 23/4/42. Reports re -- Disposition enemy aircraft; Movement enemy aircraft; Location enemy bomb dumps near Diddyman's Creek; Location enemy A/A guns. Report engagement Komiatum 23/4/42:- Lieut Hitchcock and Rfn Forrester and J Mayos (NGVR) engaged enemy patrol of sixty at KOMIATUM 23/4/42 fighting from 11am to 6pm. 3 enemy killed some wounded. Extra troops apparently brought from LAE. Enemy destroyed KOMIATUM, also remaining flour (NGVR supplies) stored there. Radio withdrawn to MUBO and Salamaua scouting patrol also withdrawn temporarily as considered ineffective without direct radio contact. Rfn Forrester, HW reported missing.
24 Apr 1942 LAE patrol reports enemy have established a small outpost at HEATH's Plantation, approximatly 7 miles out from LAE. Believed to be for purpose of air observation. Lieut Howard reported Operational HQ LAE Area 1900 hours 24/4/42. Raid on KOMIATUM:- Reported that enemy force returned to Salamaua and our patrols re-established in forward area.
25 Apr 1942 Lieut Gardner to take charge of LofC under Capt Simpson in WAMPIT DROME - MARI area. Instructions from CO to B Company (ex Gill): B Company's role is to deny enemy road to WAU from Salamaua but to take no offensive action until instructed. Salamaua patrol report considerable benzine dumps in lots of 20 to 30 drums along drome road SALAMAUA between McDonald's junction and Logui cemetery. Located between road and mangrove swamp and covered with coconut fronds. STORES - In response to radio ex 8MD 24/4/42 re food supplies in this area for NGVR personnel and native carriers advised position as per radio BL 657.
26 Apr 1942 Madang advised "EDITH" being prepared for trip to Wewak. Launch commandeered. 5 NGVR personnel accompanying. Expect arrice Wewak "Friday next". 4 NGVR personnel with Strachan i/c to maintain O.P. MADANG area. Advised 8MD 4 Komiatum natives who by their own confession led Japanese from salamaua to Komiatum now in custody. Requested instructions as to action to be taken regarding these natives. LAE patrol reoports that from observations best time for raid on aircraft at LAE would be between 0530 hours and 0600 hours.
27 Apr 1942 Message from 8MD - FROM GENERAL MORRIS. MY CONGRATULATIONS ON EFFICIENT MANNER IN WHICH INTELLIGENCE MATTERS IS BEING FORWARDED FROM LAE TO SALAMAUA AREA COMMENT LIEUT PHILLIPS ON THE FINE JOB HE IS DOING IN SUPPLYING THIS MOST VALUABLE INFORMATION. AIF RECONNAISSANCE. Salamaua forward area. No sign of enemy. Rfn Forrester reported back to forward patrol. Two Japanese fighters reccd. MADANG and SEK 1430 hours (Town and drome). Message from Oakley advising arrived Mt Hagen with doctor, nurse, also 13 AIF and 21 civilians.
HQ B Company instructed to move forward into Operational area and to report to CO on arrival. Disposition of 1st Independent Company - 1 section in Salamaua area, rest of Platoon LAE Area. Lieut Howard, Independent Company commencing detailed recce, occupying approximatly 8 days to commence 30 apr 1942.
30 Apr 1942 Salamaua patrol report suspect enemy transferring personnel from LAE to SALAMAUA by schooner. Enemy carrying out daily recce with two planes coastline Salamaua to Morobe. Radio ex Lt Howard to 8MD advising 50% Independent company unfit at Bulwa. Final recce being carried out LAE area. Considered that operations should not be delayed this area. Action proposed in conjunction with NGVR as soon as recce completed. Advised 8MD that CO (Major Edwards) agreed with above recommendation, especially in view of enemy activities in SALAMAUA area. Operational HQ LAE/MARKHAM area now in direct radio comunication with SALAMAUA. SALAMAUA - Enemy patrols believed to be filtering inland in attempt to occupy MUBO. Mission and black Mission natives assisting as guides and scouts. All B Company platoons moving forward to contact Lieut hitchcock.
1 May 1942 Enquired from 8MD possibility of arranging aerial transport service for evacuation medically unfit personnel who cannot travel overland. Labu native arrested as spy shot whilst attempting to escape at DIDDY. Japanese patrol ex LAE advanced out along Markham Road in direction of NADZAB. NGVR lorry on Markham Road captured, together with quantity of equipment and stores on board. Party of 4 AIF and NGVR personnel proceeding along Markham road in direction of LAE surprised two and one half miles from NADZAB at 2.45 pm. Sig McBarron (AMF attached) and Sgt Mayne (AIF) captured, Rfn Rowse and Cockram escaped into bush. Portion of stores etc on lorry burnt. Lorry became bogged on Markham Road and abandoned by enemy. Portion of stores recovered. Enemy retired to LAE. Instructions from 8MD to Major Stanfield (LofC) not to arrange for full battalion - route to be maintained for small parties only. No further evidence of enemy moving inland from SALAMAUA. 8MD advised in response to our radio BL 682 that negotiations in progress for suitable aircraft for transporting supplies, troops and casualties between Port Moresby and NGVR.
2 May 1942 Radio A 910 from 8MD - "APPROVAL GIVEN MAJOR I.L.FLEAY AIF TO COMMAND EXISTING FORCE IN MOROBE DISTRICY. HE WILL ARRIVE BY AIR WAU FIRST OPPOERTUNITY." Summary of position re stores and supplies in this area for both NGVR personnel and natives forwarded to 8MD.
3 May 1942 Lieuts Phillips and Howard and 4OR's attacked near LAE at 0840 hours 3/5/42. Definitely established enemy have never been to NADZAB drome.
4 May 1942 SALAMAUA recce patrol reports enemy activity SALAMAUA Aerodrome. Number of aircraft landed. Recce made of BULOLO valley 100 to 1220 hours by fighter, believed to be Japanese.
5 May 1942 B Company HQ established at MUBO. Lieut Hitchcock relieved by Lieut O'Loghlan. Lieut Lane's platoon close reserve. Frequent air patrols maintained by enemy along Markham Road and Markham River since 1/5/42. Radio from 8MD - "MAJOR I.L.FLEAY AS AREA COMMANDER WILL HAVE FULL AUTHORITY ACT ON BEHALF THESE HEADQUARTERS AND TO OBTAIN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AS REQUESTED BY US. HE WILL BE IN MOROBE DISTRICT IN NEXT FEW DAYS. NOT POSSIBLE SEND STAFF OFFICER NOW OWING DISTORTED COMMUNICATIONS."
6 May 1942 Advised 8MD in reply to their radio G 2738 that BULOLO drome can be made serviceable with 48 hours of notification. WAU drome requires removal obstacles only. No other dromes in vicinity over 1,000 yards long.
7 May 1942 LAE recce patrol reports - Field gun installed by Japanese at outpost at Heath's. Believed to be 75mm regimental gun. Radio from Operational HQ LAE/MARKHAM area advising their position located by enemy. Owing to difficulty in transporting stores and supplies on northern bank of Markham river and natives having gone bush owing to enemy activities, Operational HQ being moved to southern bank, and will operate from there. Necessary to move a roundabout way through mountains to southern bank owing to lack of carriers between our operational camp in foothills and the Markham River. Radio from 8MD advising that no further unfit personnel to be despatched overland - to be concentrated vicinity WAU.
Radio No A 1047 ex 8MD - "CONCENTRATE ALL MEDICALLY UNFIT AND TRANSFERRED PERSONNEL AT WAU BY 13TH MAY STOP ASSEMBLE AT SUNSHINE BY 18TH MAY TEN THOUSAND EUROPEAN RATIONS PLUS FOUR THOUSAND NATIVE RATIONS TWO HUNDRED CARRIERS AND ALL AVAILABLE MULES AND PACKS STOP ADVISE CONDITION OF BRIDGES ROAD WAU SUNSHINE STOP NECESSARY HAVE BRIDGE AVAILABLE FOR MT TRAFFIC FOR NIAL SIGNED FLEAY." Advised 8MD that temporary bridges under construction. Estimated time of completion 21st May, but traffic can at present be handled by small truck between bridges. SALAMAUA recce patrol reported enemy fighters appear to come from HOPOI drome on coast 21 miles east of LAE.
11 May 1942 Native rumour that a white man hiding in this vicinity. Rigorous search in progress.
12 May 1942 Radio G 2779 from 8MD stating transport planes expected to arrive WAU drom 0730 hours Wednesday 13th May. Drome to be cleared to allow quick turn round of planes.
13 May 1942 Radio requesting weather report to be notified to Air Force HQ by 0500 hours not receiving here until approximatly 0830 hours. Further radio received stating operation cancelled temporarily. Weather report at 0500 hours each day to be radioed to 8MD until further notice.
14 May 1942 Advised 8MD that Lieut Howard (AIF Independent Company) now 14/5/42 prepared to take offensive action. In view of 8MD A 1047 10/5/42, requested instructions whether such action to be taken. Major Edwards of opinion enemy can be cleared from Heath's plantation any time desired. Radios from 8MD - "FOR EDWARDS AND HOWARD. REFERENCE YOUR BL746/7 TAKE NO ACTION FOR THE MOMENT ORDERS WILL BE ISSUED BY 16TH MAY." "FOR HOWARD. TAKE NO FURTHER OFFENSIVE ACTION WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS FROM THIS HQ. MAINTAIN CONSTANT PATROLLING STOP SIGNED FLEAY."
15 May 1942 Twin-engined Japanese recce. Plane reported over MUBO for 30 minutes. 8MD requested urgently all positive identification or information re pro-Japanese mission personnel. All matters referred to in 8MD radio A 1047 of 10/5/42 now completed.
16 May 1942 MADANG - One identified two-engined aircraft over ASTROLOBE BAY and BAGABAGA. Returned south at 1500 hours. Radio No. G2792 from 8MD - "SUPREME INPORTANCE INDENTIFICATIONS ENEMY UNITS BE TRANSMITTED THIS HQ UTMOST RAPIDITY FRANKED EMERGENCY OPERATIONS. IN YOUR OPERATIONS ENEMY TROOPS HAVE YOU CAPTURED ANY PAPERS UNIFORMS COLOUR PATCHES IF SO WIRELESS DESCRIPTION AND FORWARD FIRST OPPORTUNITY THIS HQ." Radio No. GL2793 from 8MD - "TAKE NO REPEAT NO OFFENSIVE ACTOIN UNTIL FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. MAINTAIN PATROLLING AND OBTAIN ALL THE INFORMATION POSSIBLE REGARDING ENEMY STRENGTH AND DISPOSITION. WEATHER REPORTS ARE TO LEAVE YOUR HEADQUARTERS BY 0500 HOURS DAILY. SITUATION REPORTS ARE TO BE SENT TO THIS HEADQUARTERS AT 0700 AND 1800 HOURS DAILY."
17 May 1942 Advised 8MD in reply to radio that no enemy clothing or papers yet obtained. Patrols instructed to make every effort to obtain identifications.
19 May 1942 Radio GL 2802 ex 8MD advising RAAF desire to test BULOLO and WAU dromes by landing planes not earlier than 0800 hours. Advised 8MD in reply to above radio that WAU drome servicable immediatly. BULOLO drome requires maximum 48 hours to prepare. Work commencing immediatly.
20 May 1942 Radio from 8MD re food drops: (A 1169) "LEAVE DUMPS AT PRESENT POSITIONS. ADVISE POSITIONS AND ESTIMATED AMOUNTS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE." Advised 8MD that BULOLO drome ready for test by 0900 hours 20/5/42. Wire only across, operated by hand winches.
21 May 1942 Radioed instructions from 8MD to forward weather reports visibility and BULOLO Aerodrome to leave NGVR HQ at 0430 hours daily until further notice. WAU and BULOLO aerodrome obstructions to be cleared tonight, 21 May. 0715 hours two-engined unidentified plane flew over BULOLO 10,000 ft and laid long trail smoke as if testing wind direction. Continued in direction of LAE. In reply to 8MD radio A 1174 sdvised estimated enemy strength now LAE area 600 to 800, SALAMAUA area 150 to 200. Dring period when forward scouts were out of close contact with enemy at LAE, numbers qoted may have been augmented owing to known visit of enemy freighter to ........as reported our radio BL753 to 8MD. MADANG reported Japanese fighter over RAMU valley 20/5/42. Over Kedawai at 1100 hours.
22 May 1942 Urgent radio ex 8MD - "FORWARD RAAF PORT MORESBY HALF HOURLY REPEAT HALF HOURLY COMMENCING IMMEDIATLY BY PRIORITY MOST IMMEDIATE REPEAT MOST IMMEDIATE MESSAGES WEATHER REPORTS WAU BULOLO. REPEAT REPORTS MPL COMMAND FOR INFORMATION." LAE recce patrol attacked.
23 May 1942 Flight of transport planes protected by fighters arrived WAU Aerodrome from Port Moresby at ...... Troops and stores unloaded while fighters reconnoitred overhead, and aircraft took off on return trip approximatly 10 mins after landing. Second flight, bringing additional troops and stores, landed WAR Aerodrome ........ Third flight, with further reinforcements, landed WAU Aerodrome .......
25 May 1942 Recce patrol LAE area reports enemy outpost at Heath's 25/5/42 in radio communication with LAE. Also reported that two white objects like balloons, which appeared to penetrate the clouds and be anchored at LAE were observed. Unconfirmed native reports state that these are often seen. LAE patrols reports details of uniform as worn by Japanese patrol as follows - White cap, medium light grey flannel shirt. Colour patch worn on arm approximatly 2", purple circle with two half inch discs. Black bandolier. Light green khaki trousers. Khaki puttees. Sandals. According to native reports, enemy personnel firing regimental gun wear blue caps with silver anchor embroided just above the peak. This latter report unconfirmed.
26 May 1942 Flight of transports ex Port Morsby with reinforcements for Kanga force 5th Independent Company and stores landed. Ten minutes after departure of transports six enemy "zero" fighters circled township. 8 bombs dropped on MUBO (Salamaua area) at 1450 hours. No damage or casualties.
